National Award Recognizes Global Safety Achievements
Employees working safely at IAP locations around the world helped the company achieve its safety goals for 2010, and in the process also earned an Occupational Excellence Award from the National Safety Council. The award honors companies that achieve high safety standards within their industry segment, with winners reporting injuries or illnesses that led to days away from work at a rate that’s equal to or less than half of the government’s average lost workday rate for their particular industry.
IAP’s global Lost Workday Case rate (LWDC) dropped 34 percent last year as compared to 2009. Just as impressive was a 16 percent reduction in the 2010 Total Case Rate (TCR); a measurement established by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) that measures the number of work-related injuries and illnesses per 100 employees. It marks a 72 percent reduction in such recordable incidents since IAP acquired Johnson Controls Government Services division in early 2005. The TCR has declined every year since that acquisition.
“I am extremely proud of the efforts of our entire workforce in meeting the 2010 safety goals,” says IAP President Bob Phillips. “These numbers represent real people who are performing at a high level of safety and going home each day to their families in the same healthy condition. An injury-free workplace is what it’s all about.”
The safety performance broken down by IAP’s three Business Area Teams was impressive with Base Operations and Support Services employees beating their TRC goal by 26 percent and their LWDC target by 42 percent. Projects in the Professional and Technical Services area reached the significant benchmark of having zero Lost Work Day Incidents in 2010. Global Operations and Logistics projects, many of them overseas in austere environments where employees face long workweeks, tallied the lowest TRC rate in the company.
“These numbers demonstrate our dedication to safety; and that our workforce is focused on performing their jobs safely,” says Senior ES&H Manager Bill Smith. “Safety performance is all about leadership – throughout the company, from the managers in the corporate office and at the project level, combined with the leadership exhibited by every employee in the field. We’re proud that our collective leadership in the safety arena has been recognized by the National Safety Council.”
IAP employees are now targeting ambitious 2011 safety goals that would mark an even greater improvement over last year, with several initiatives now in place to support that effort, including ongoing safety audits to measure and identify safety risks and achievements at the project level.
